REVIEWS

The Washington Post Book Review - 11.30.20 . . . Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. does the author and reader proud with a sumptuous “deluxe manuscript edition” of the original 1912 novel “A Princess of Mars.” The protective case encloses not just the book itself, augmented with numerous illustrations by Frank Frazetta, Roy Krenkel and many others, but also several extras, most notably facsimile pages from Burroughs’s original manuscript of this iconic planetary romance.  --- Michael Dirda, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Book Critic
The two PRINCESS books arrived yesterday.  Holy Toledo! Quite amazing. . . seriously. I mean, I see a lot of very nice limited and deluxe editions and these books are exceptional.  Well done.  M. Z.

I agree, this is probably the most amazing box set of any kind I've seen. Simply beautiful.   D. O.

"Mister Burroughs, Captain Carter, and the Princess are more than pleased that their epic adventure has been memorialized by a volume for the ages!"  I am sorry that I could not be the first to offer my congratulations but circumstances beyond my control interfered. Your Princess is a sight to behold.   P. M.

"The project is a total success, the book and associated items are a magnificent achievement.  It is beyond my expectations and will be a tough act to follow ... by anyone.  Everything from the Folio Box to the book itself is just over the top with perfection."  J. M.

Thank you very much for an outstanding book. Your edition of A Princess of Mars, is now one of my finest books in my collection. I could not be happier. You and your staff are to be congratulated. Well done.  T. C.

"The book arrived today and I have just  quickly perused it and it is truly magnificent in every way. Well done to you and the team, I can’t fault the production and the extras are fascinating. The pen  so beautiful in itself.  I will spend many happy hours looking at the this gem and I am sure all old ERB fans like me will feel a deep sense of wonder and nostalgia every time the book and contents are looked at."   M. H.

Thanks for the glorious volume, A Princess of Mars, and the many accompanying items. This will be a hard entry in the series to top, but it needn't be topped, since A Princess of Mars is surely worthy of this extra attention.   J. M.

 - I received my Princess of Mars book and it is magnificent. Wonderful bookmaking art!I just finished opening up the PRINCESS OF MARS package.  It’s difficult to describe, but this offering has topped everything else that you have published in the past!  It is absolutely mind-boggling!  Spectacular and awesome!      Everything from the clamshell box to the book itself – the various manuscripts and documents – and the beautiful pen and medallion – make this the finest tribute to ERB that I have seen!  The upgrade in size to a 9 3/8” volume is entirely appropriate.  You need something that size to adequately show off the book and the illustrations!  The five color plates by Schoonover are wonderful!
I was not familiar with Iain McCaig’s work before seeing this volume, but his dustjacket is beautiful, as are his various interior illustrations.  The one opposite page 16 is my favorite.  Beautiful!  And what an amazing who’s who of art credits!  Thomas Yeates filled the book with wonderful illustrations.  And I was especially please to see Robert Abbett’s cover for the Ballantine paperback presented here – that was the first POM that I read – and the first Burroughs I ever read was the Ballantine Chessmen, also with an Abbett cover.  I was also not familiar with Aaron Miller or Greg Manchess, but their contributions were also beautiful!  The Roy Carnon and C. Saunders art was very much appreciated.                                          There was a terrific selection of new and old artwork – from the obscure to the well-known to material presented here for the first time.  And Leslie Cabarga’s title page was – well – a work of art.  I have long been a fan of his Betty Boop and other Fleischer illustrations – it’s terrific seeing him in action here!  The book is breath-taking.  And the contributions by Bob Zeuschner, Michael Moorcok and yourself are much appreciated – as were the notes on artiwork at the back of the book.  Oh – and the Grindberg and Klauba drawings at the front of the book are eye-popping!
Suffice it to say, the “extras” really take us back to 1911 and 1912.  I’ve read many excerpts of ERB’s correspondence with the Munsey editors in the past – from Irwin Porges’ book and other places.  But it is great having the replicas to read over.  They really put you in the time frame.  And ERB’s original draft is a joy to behold.  I am also a sucker for original Munsey checks and have a few myself.  So the replica of the very first one for ERB was a lot of fun.  And nothing puts you in the mood better than the original cover and contents pages – and the very first of the POM story pages with Fred Small’s great spot illustration.  All around, this was, as promised, a magnificent package – topped off by the most fabulous medallion yet (and numbered/lettered to boot!).  And, of course, the replica pen.  You will have a very difficult time topping this one!    T.
