Tarzan of the Apes - The Artist Edition
Comments & Reviews

The sixth title in The ERB Limited Edition Collection and each one is more amazing than the last. Here is  THE ultimate edition of Tarzan…book and clamshell box handcrafted in leather with letterpress title page and new illustrated endpapers by Darren Bader. Two wrap-around dust jackets fitted on each book feature a new Tarzan painting by Sanjulian and the original 1st edition dust jacket. 25 color plates, including two double-page fold-outs, by Frazetta, Brom, Manchess, St. John, Jeffrey Jones, Patrick, Miller, Thomas Yeates, Grindberg, Jusko, Neal Adams, Hogarth and more. 75 black & white illustrations, with 16 full-page illustrations by Zdenek Burian and a 16-page Artist’s Sketch Section. Plus a separate envelope with facsimiles of ALL ERB’s original correspondence about this title, from first placing Tarzan in the pulp All-Story Weekly, to rejection letters from book publishers, to his contract with McClurg for the first book edition, and even with A.L. Burt for reprints!
This is not hyperbole…this is truly the ultimate edition of ERB’s most important book. Here’s the complete original text, but accompanied by all manner of extras to help you better enjoy the story. From cover to cover, it’s about the art as much as about the story, with work from a list of master illustrators who have brought Tarzan to life for all of us.
Enclosed in a gorgeous clam-shell box, bound in full leather, with a fabulous signature page signed by Michel Dirda, who wrote the forward, Neal Adams, Darren Bader, Thomas Yeates, and John Patrick. Patrick’s frontispiece, in full color, is also first published here. Plus a facimile pen that ERB used to write the manuscript; a glass slide, in full color, announcing the first Tarzan film (used by theatres).
The two jackets allow you to pick which one to use on the outside—Sanjulians lovely new work, or the original McClurg jacket, by Fred J. Arting, meticulously restored by Phil Normand. The clamshell box is an amazing 4 inches deep, with a color plate mounted on the top, and gilt decorative spine titles. What an amazing homage to ERB’s most famous work!!   -  Our Highest Recommendation  --   Bud's Art Books
My box was delivered at 1:41pm today and it took me all of about two and a half minutes to get to the gold inside!
A great job all around. The border designs and spine for the box look perfect. The color plates are a visual treat in abundance. The color and sharpness of the reproductions is fantastic. The illuminated chapter titles worked out quite well. And all the black-and-white illos! Fabulous! It’s wonderful to have all the Burian illustrations in a copy of the book, the first time they’ve been married with a Tarzan in english, I think. This book is so chock full of art that I’ll be reading it again just so I don’t miss anything. Good work, good work!
And the two dust jackets. The Sanjulian looks great, and I was happy to see the sketches in the back of the book that showed the iterations it went through. You did a fine job picking the paper for the Arting! The printing came out beautifully. The softening of the colors takes nothing at all away from the art or the impression of how the true first looked. Of course I’m putting mine in a jacket protector right away.
It’s a project that involved countless man-hours from everyone involved but it turned out super. You should be proud, I know the rest of us are.

I have had very little time to spend as yet on this absolutely brilliant labour of love . . .  However, the attention to detail stands out on every page, and the quality of this latest limited edition is of the very highest. I think that even the most critical eye would be very hard pressed to find even the slightest reason to find fault. This is definitely a work of art, and like all real works of art brings greater appreciation with each viewing.   I anticipate many happy hours with this, and all lovers of good books, beautifully and imaginately presented and packaged, with all the accompanying delightful "extras", owes you a debt of gratitude.  --   A. Wow......you have outdone yourself again!  That is clearly the most elaborate presentation of Tarzan of the Apes ever assembled.  ERB himself would not have believed it.  You've clearly created a masterpiece that I don't think anyone will ever attempt to outdo.  I'm going to meticulously read all the background letters you included.  I'm almost afraid to open the book itself; I don't want to soil any page of it.  --  J. S.
Once again, you have our done yourself, this is the most impressive book you have done yet.  -- M. C.
I truly love the new Tarzan of the Apes Artist Edition! Definitely worth the $250 to me! I've viewed each of the b&w and color illustrations and they are wonderful! I think this has motivated me to re-read this classic. Love the double book covers and of course, the packet of document excerpts, the medallion, the see-thru item. the pen, etc.  Afterwards I got out my copy of your also great ERB Bibliography to read all the entries about this book, some of which refer to the artifacts you've included in the Artist Edition.
Man, you have surely outdone yourself once again. I came in this morning to find the book had arrived, so I  haven't had time to pour over it. But I opened it up to choose some more scans for our website, and I was very pleased with what I saw. I may just have to read it again with all those illustrations to accompany it. And the extra packet of letters about publishing it, and rejections, those are a ton of fun, I look forward to reading them very much.   -- B. P.
Just got Tarzan of the Apes.  Another masterful job.  You threw the kitchen sink in again.  Thank you.  -- R. S.
I paged through the book to look at all of the wonderful art, and examined the contents of the folder and decorative box. . . .   Magnificent job, and I've seen several others posting pictures of their copies of the book in the facebook group, For the Love of All Things Edgar Rice Burroughs. I'd say the book is a big hit!!
So, thanks for all of your work and care in putting this volume together. This -- and the actual first McClurg edition -- are probably the two best editions of "Tarzan of the Apes" there will ever be.
I received them today, and they are a beautiful rendition of the edition.  Congratulations on a work of art!  Thanks for carrying on the work of ERB.   -- V. H.
What a beautiful job on this edition. I knew it would be so, and when UPS tried to deliver - and left, I asked my wife to drive around and find the truck! I was not disappointed. It's truly wonderful. Thanks for doing this. Can't wait for ATEC!
