Update and Case/Title Page Design
We're exciting about the progress we're making.  I hesitate to try to predict a precise ship date with the complexity of this edition.   I'll just say generally that barring something totally unexpected, we should be shipping middle to the end of May.
Please note that I'm shifting to a new email - jim@erbbooks.com .  Please mark this address as not junk/spam.
Here are some details about the  . . .
Case/Title Page Design
We made the decision early on to use use Cromwell Flanders Marsala Eurbond leather for the not just the binding of the book, but the case as well.   Marsala is a deep maroon color and it's very close to the color of the original A. C. McClurg first edition cloth.  The spine and front cover will be stamped in antique gold in a manner similar A Princess of Mars - The Manuscript Edition.  In fact, both sets on the shelf will look almost identical  in size, shape and layout, but distinctively different in color, design and composition.

The three color letterpress title page has been completed.  It was designed by Zavier Cabarga after the first Tarzan book illustration by Fred Arting and printed on a heavier stock paper on a vintage press using three printing separate printing plates.  Across the page from the title page will be the painting by John Patrick of Tarzan peering through the jungle.  The colors of the two pieces complement each other almost creating a single composition.

TA - The Artist's Edition is the sixth set in the ERB Limited Edition Collection. But it is the second of three specially cased sets that commemorate ERB's first novels for three  new worlds he created: Barsoom, mythic Africa and Pellucidar.  (At the Earth's Core will release early in 2022.)   These series have gone on to account for most of his books, and his most popular books - the Mars, Tarzan and Pellucidar series.   These specially cased books feature the document portfolio containing rare items such as letter, contracts and advertisements - many never before seen - that pertain to the creation these seminal works.

I hesitate to try to predict a ship date other than to guess sometime in May.  Please contact me with any questions. jim@erbbooks.com

March 17, 2021 - Excerpt from the Introduction
In spite of some unavoidable delays, we are doing everything we can to move this massive project toward completion.  .... We believe you're going to enjoy the extra effort as well as the extras put into this set including the care taken in selecting and placing the illustrations, the rarely-if-ever seen enclosures, the leather case, the color letterpress title page, the two dust jackets and the free shipping.
You can get updates on production and features of the set on our website under UPDATES-MEDIA. And please feel free to contact me with any questions on my new email jim@erbbooks.com.
Here is an excerpt from the Introduction,  . .
Tarzan of the Apes: The Artist Edition set includes the illustrated leather bound smyth-sewn book, the portfolio with replica material and bonus items—all housed in a debossed custom leather case. The book features two dust jackets, a color letterpress title page and includes 100 black & white and 28 color illustrations by over 30 professional artists spanning 109 years. (1912-2021) The artwork, most of which illustrates specific scenes from Tarzan of the Apes, has been inserted into the 1914 A. C. McClurg first edition text making this the most illustrated ERB book published to date.
There are always two stories in every work of fiction. There is the story written by the author for publication and there is the story of how the book came to be published. The artwork and artifacts in this set are selected with the hope of helping the reader rediscover the wonder of this classic adventure while uncovering the events and circumstances leading to its publication and worldwide popularity. . . . . . . . . .
There’s a lot to experience in this set including the delightful foreword by Pulitzer Prize winning critic Michael Dirda and the Artist Preface from Thomas Yeates—one of the great Tarzan illustrators of our time and whose artwork is featured prominently throughout the book. If you skim through the illustration content pages, you’ll see there are 22 Zdeněk Burian full-page illustrations for Tarzan of the Apes as well as artwork from nine artists published here for the first time. That includes the masterful paintings by Sanjulian and Daren Bader commissioned for the dust jacket and endpapers of this edition. You’ll discover more about the accomplishments
and creative process of the amazingly talented illustrators in this edition in the artist bio and sketch sections.
*** The painting above, "The Light of Knowledge" by Cynthia Sheppard, is plate # 8 and one of the numerous previously unpublished illustrations featured in the Artist Edition of Tarzan of the Apes.

March 10, 2021
We're working everyday to speed along the ship date for Tarzan of the Apes - The Artist Edition.  But we have run into more delays than even we anticipated.  Some of the delays are due to the number of extras we have added to this edition over previous editions including:
  • Most illustrations to date: 100 black & white and 28 color illustrations by 31 artists spanning 109 years. (1912-2021)
  • Full leather book and drop-spine case.
  • Two dust jackets and three-color letterpress title page.
Our new estimated ship dates (add free shipping to the list of extras) are late April to mid- May.
We apologize for the delay, but are committed to offering the highest quality and the best content possible for our tribute to this  epic story.  Email me with any questions:  jim@erbbooks.com

Just sent out an update email to our mailing list.  You can view it here.
It's amazing to see this edition come together.  In the past few month we've added Neal Adams art to the edition and he'll be signing all the editions.  In addition, the Sanjulian dust jacket painting in amazing!   It's worth getting the edition just for the  22 Zdenek Burian illustrations for Tarzan of the Apes.  Tom Yeates will be writing the artist's  preface and signing the book.  He also heavily contributed illustrations for the book.  There will be an 8-page fold-out of four of the best Tarzan artists with Tarzan illustrations side by side: Foster, Hogarth, Kubert and Adams.   Michael Dirda, Pulitzer Prize winning author has written the foreword and will be signing the book.  The list goes on and on.

  • Pre-Orders have been brisk for ToA. If you ordered A Princess of Mars - The Manuscript Edition we'll continue to hold your corresponding number for Tarzan of the Apes until the end of the month.  But if you've not pre-ordered by then or contacted us, we'll release those numbers to new customers.
  • New Ship Date - Late March/Mid April.  We are experiencing several delays as we prepare to take the book to production.   Each book & box requires almost one square yard (9 sf) of  leather for production.  We've been informed that our order of 700 yards of Eurobond Marsala Flanders leather coming from the tannery in Spain will be delayed by at least two weeks.
  • Two Dust Jackets:  One dust jacket will be a based on the classic Tarzan of the Apes 1st edition dust jacket illustration and design by Fred Arting.  In addition we've commissioned two  double panel wide paintings  for this edition.  Daren Bader's painting is featured on the landing page of the erbbooks.com website.  And Sanjulian has created a beautiful painting (see close-up above) that masterfully captures Tarzan's epic battle scene with Kerchak in grand fashion.   One painting will be used for the second dust jacket and the other one will be used for full color endpapers.

THE MAKING OF THE PUBLISHER'S LIMITED                EDITION OF BACK TO THE STONE AGE(2015)

The video to the left shows Rob LoMascolo letterpress printing The Publisher's Edition of Back to the Stone Age  by Edgar Rice Burroughs.  This was the first book published by Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. since I Am A Barbarian was released in 1967.   It was also the first ERB Inc. book to feature multiple color illustrations (including original paintings by Thomas Grindberg and Bob Eggleton) or to be boxed, signed or numbered.  The text was printed using the original 300 1 lb. printing plates used for the 1937 first edition.   Each book was presented in a custom clamshell box that also housed one of the original printing plates.   The edition was limited to 300 signed and numbered sets and is sold out.

(below) These pictures show the binding and fulfillment  process for the book.  The first picture is the first copy off the press - lettered "A" and presented to Jim Sullos and Cathy Wilbanks of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. for the company archives.   It features an original sketch by Thomas Grindberg.
